W/C 18th September

In Zoe's lesson we have registered on UCAS and research about universities and courses they offer.

In Corrine's lesson we made a wire sculpture linked to our summer project and reflect about it in my sketchbook. I have enjoyed trying a different medium such as fantasy film. I like its shiny and smooth texture.

At visual communication lesson we have given the meaning of visual communication and started the lesson with a quotation " Design is what happens between conceiving an idea and fashioning the means to carry it out" ,which means how a design process progress from an idea to an final outcome.
We have also looked at typography and different artists such as Pietro Bembo, Christopher Wool , Barbara Kruger. After the presentation we have done 4 experiments linked to our summer project. We had to play around with letters using words: decay, distortion, deconstruction. I have enjoyed it a lot because I had a flood of ideas coming to my mind and I have decided that it would be good to have all of the drawings on separate pieces of paper, so I can start build my portfolio.

In life drawing lesson we have been drawing for 5 mins with the right hand and then swap with the left. The one I did with the left hand come out quite good, and I have enjoyed trying something different. I have discovered other style when doing it and the lines are loose and sketchy. It was a continuous line drawing.

For the other drawing we had to split the paper in 4 and in each section to draw a part of the body using 2 colored pastels. I have to mention that when taking out the masking tape the paper ripped. Next time I should be more carefully about that and also would be good to use pencil measurement to keep the proportions right.

W/C 25th September

In 3D lesson we have made an hand sculpture using alginate and plaster. It is a long process because it takes about a week to dry. Also you have to consider ratio so you can make the substance.

Firstly, we had to mix the alginate with water  in a bowl and dip your hand in it. Keep the hand in the bowl for 15 mins. Take the hand out very slowly, so the details aren't damaged. Then you pour the plaster mixture to fill the void. Let it dry for about a week.

What Went Wrong?

The bowl wasn't large enough so I couldn't dip my hand deep. So my outcome may not be as desired.

What Went Well?

It was easy to follow the process as our teacher was brilliant: she explained everything to the finest detail and made sure that we couldn't go wrong at any stage of the process; she also ensured that we had all the equipment necessary for a successful outcome.

Even Better If

Next time I would use a larger bowl so that I could utilise the whole of my hand.

Also, if I could think of different shapes and forms that could link to interior design.

In the Life Drawing Lesson we have experimented with thread and PVA making our stunning works of art. We have managed to create outcomes that we can use for our portfolio and develop them at a later stage.

What Went Wrong?

The PVA dried out too quickly so I wasn't able to form a desired shape.

What Went Well?

I was creative enough to use two colours of thread so I could get a contrast between different lines.

Even Better If I use more PVA so the thread doesn't stick that quickly so I could play around with the lines.

IIn Visual communication lesson we have explored colour and  their meaning. Each colour has an impact on our psychology, behavior and emotions. In different countries colours symbolise different emotions. For this experiment I have interpreted Nava Iubelski's style because she has eye catching colours explosion in her artwork and each of them expresses emotions and feelings.

W/C 2nd October

In 3D lesson we have continued with our hand sculpture. We have used a scalpel to take out the sculpture out of the plastic bowl.

5 Don's when using a knife:
* Don't cut on all the surfaces, only on cutting mats.
*Dont leave it unattended.
*Don't leave the knife on the edge of the table.
*Dont harm yourself and consider other people when working with a knife.
* Don't cut towards yourself.

After taking out the alginate little by little to do not damage the plaster, we took pictures of our sculptures. Mine came out really good and smooth. All the details such as thick and thin lines are engraved into the plaster and it looks great because of the amount of details, which makes it feels like real hand.
The only issue I have is that one nail is missing and I found out that it was a common problem in the class.

In Visual Communication lesson we carried on with the color experiment. I have used the drawing from summer project and transferred it on a black sheet of paper and used oil pastels for drawing it. I like this medium because it is easy to blend with a tissue paper and the colors mix together creating tones and shades. I have used a black paper because it relates to decay and also it links to a wallpaper style. I have been inspired by William Morrais who is a wallpaper designer and his theme is only floral, which I like it very much because of the details, lines, bold colors and vibrant contrast.

WWW? I have used words that links to decay and also makes the subject easier to understand for the viewer.

EBI I would fill up the whole sheet with different sizes of the same flower, so it would look more as a wallpaper.

In life drawing lesson we have warmed up by doing quick sketches of the model. We had to draw 10 sketches on the same paper 1 minute each using a pencil and a coloured pencil.  I found it quite challenging because I couldn't get any details and proportions as the time was limited. Also I found it quite interesting and it is a good exercise to start such a lesson, so when you do your next drawing you already feel mode confident about it.

EBI I would draw the model from different angles and maybe try different colours for each one, so when they overlap they all stand out.

Our last drawing lasts 40 minutes and we have used oil pastel for it. I have to mention that oil pastels isn't my favourite medium to work with because it gets messy and the colour spreads all over the page.

WWW? The model was posing so each time we draw we had different angles to experiment and the paper will not be filled up with the same position and angle.

What went wrong? The body isn't proportionally correct in all my drawings.

EBI I would start measuring the model when drawing  using a pencil, so it looks realistic and  professional .

W/C 9TH October
In printmaking lesson, we have experimented with drypoint technique as well as with linocut.

STEP BY STEP DRYPOINT TECHNIQUE:
1. Use an aluminium plate to engrave the drawing onto it.
2. Use a special sharp tool to engrave the plate.
3.With a piece of card spread the oil-based paint onto the plate.
4. Rub the excess of the paint using a fabric.
5. soak the paper in the water and then absorb the excess of the water using newsprint paper.
6. Put the paper on the intaglio machine and cover it with the wet paper.
7. The drawing should come up bold and very detailed.

WWW? I have used a range of materials to experiment with. I have experimented with the fabric, collage, Chine-collé. I have seen the difference between texture and how it came up on each of it. I thought to take these experiments further and develop them into a final outcome.

In photography lesson, we have created a photogram

Step by step process:
1.Choose a picture from the internet or your own, make it negative using photoshop.
2. Make a strip test. Expose the image for 1-6 secs.

3.Put the strip in the developer for 2 mins, then in the stop for 3oo secs, then in the fixer for 30 secs.
4. Check what's the best exposure for your picture. For mine was 3.6 secs.
5. Repeat the whole process again using a bigger photographic paper and expose it for 3.6 secs.
6. Put the paper with the shiny side faced up on then put the glass over it.
7. Make sure the light covers the whole image, put a wooden board over to block the light from fading the paper. Once you checked it, take out the board and expose the image.

WWW?The experiment went exactly as planned. We had all the necessary equipment. The picture wasn't underexposed either overexposed because we followed all the instructions.

EBI I would use my own picture for this experiment that links to the project theme so I can maybe develop it further and transform it into a final outcome.

IN textile lesson we have experimented with layering a different kind of paper, created a background for a drawing we will be applying on later on.
We have constructed and deconstructed paper such as sand paper, magazines, newspaper, tissue paper, tracing paper creating different surfaces for drawing on. I have also drawn the rose from decay theme using oil pastels, bamboo pen with ink.
By using a range of materials I have observed how different the drawing looks on different surfaces.

www? I have used a different kind of paper, have created layers and made the paper wrinkled which links to decay.

EBI I would use fewer colours for the background, so the drawing stands out and looks more effectively.

w/c 30th October

This week I have been experimented towards my final outcome using the materials and techniques I have used along the project and combining them all together on a single piece. I have also created worksheets that links to the theme and annotate them.
